Attempt to oust Huxley city official thwarted by community support

Ames Tribune A packed Huxley City Council meeting ended with a round of applause for the failed ousting of the city administrator Rita Conner. The special meeting Wednesday night did not allow public comment, but that did not stop about 50 people from attending the meeting, far surpassing the normal attendance of three to four, Councilmember Tracey Roberts said.  If it wasn t for the overwhelming community support for Conner, Roberts said the resolution to remove her may have passed.  “I’ve been a part of the crowd out there as a citizen and I’ve been in the seat up here as a member of the council, Huxley Mayor Kevin Deaton said at the meeting.  I’ve been a member of the Huxley community for a really long time and I’ve seen us make some really stupid decisions, but this is the worst one I’ve ever seen.”

Board talks staff reductions at D51 schools

The Board of Education and District 51 officials spent part of Tuesday’s school board meeting discussing staffing changes meant to account for a drop in enrollment. About 116 school employees have retired or resigned, according to D51. The district expects 65 of those positions will be eliminated. In doing so, it hopes to increase teacher salaries, which are about 7-10% below competing districts. Applications for the new positions will open in the coming weeks. “We hope most of that is done this month,” Diana Sirko, District 51 Superintendent said. “Ambiguity is very hard in situations like these.” Enrollment in District 51 was down about 900 students, according to a letter Sirko sent to district staff, and officials expect about half of that number to return.
