Columbiana seeks grant to expand city industrial park | News, Sports, Jobs

(Salem News photo by Danielle Garner) COLUMBIANA City Manager Lance Willard notified city council Tuesday that he had sent an application for project funding from a special congressional program, specifically local Congressman Bill Johnson. The funding was reserved to complete infrastructure projects which can be applied to completing the industrial park. Because of the need to show community support and reflect the need for the infrastructure project, Mayor Rick Noel, Dan Bekar and the American Legion wrote letters of support.

On Tuesday, council unanimously approved hiring Bill Myers as police chief following the recommendation from City Manager Lance Willard. Myers has more than 23 years of experience in law enforcement. He first joined the Columbiana department in 1995 as a part-time officer and was recently promoted to full-time before opting to try for the open position. “We believe that he is going to be a great part of the team,” Willard said. Willard said that Myers has supervisory experience, and has worked with all of the city departments over the years.

Staff Writer Wednesday was the filing deadline. Only two levy renewals and one liquor option will appear on the ballot. Voters in Unity Township will vote on the renewals of a five-year 1.5-mill levy for the fire department and a five-year 2-mill levy for the road department. Voters in the Salem 2-A precinct will vote on whether or not the Sunday sale of alcohol will be permitted at the Suburban Market on New Garden Avenue. Also, only 14 partisan candidates, most of them incumbents, filed for candidacy by the Wednesday deadline, meaning the majority of the Nov. 2 general election ballot spots will be filled by candidates who identify as independents or will remain empty on election day.

Interviews for Columbiana police chief planned soon | News, Sports, Jobs

Special to the Salem News COLUMBIANA The city should have a new police chief by the end of this month or in February. City Manager Lance Willard said during this week’s council meeting that the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) is assisting the city with the search for a new chief and the process takes about 90 days. Former chief Tim Gladis announced his retirement on Nov. 4 after 11 years of service. Gladis had more than 40 years experience in law enforcement and was named police chief in July of 2009. Since his retirement Sgt. Chris Dailey has stepped in until a replacement can be found.
