North and South Korea have restored an inter-Korean hotline cut off last year by Pyongyang amid deteriorated relations, in a move that experts called a positive step, but warned against overinterpreting its significance.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have exchanged multiple letters since the third anniversary of their April 2018 summit, and have been renewing their goal of rebuilding their strained relationship, the South’s presidential office said Tuesday after communication lines were reopened.
North Korea’s state-run Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said the resumption of communications meant that “Now, the whole Korean nation desires to see the north-south relations recovered from setback and stagnation as early as possible.”

FORESTPORT, NY - Forestport residents are saying no to a proposed granite quarry near White Lake.
They were given the chance to voice their objections at Wednesday’s Forestport Planning Board meeting. Time was limited since there has already been public discussion on the matter. Those who did speak expressed concerns on how the quarry would affect local businesses and their peaceful and quiet way of life.
Officials in Tokyo have breathed a sigh of relief at the White House’s renewed attention to the region, with some lauding Washington's renewed Asia focus.
By SETH ROBSON | STARS AND STRIPES Published: April 19, 2021 An RQ-4B Global Hawk that lifted off last week for the first time from Palmdale, Calif., is the first of three that will be operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, according to manufacturer Northrop Grumman. The drones will be deployed to Misawa Air Base, in the country’s northeast, sometime this year or later, a spokeswoman for Japan’s Defense Ministry said Monday. Ministry officials typically provide comments on condition of anonymity. The Global Hawk flies at 60,000 feet and has a line of sight to targets more than 340 miles away, according to Northrop Grumman. The exact range of the aircraft’s cameras and sensors is classified, but a Global Hawk flying near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, for example, could see well beyond the Yalu River that marks North Korea’s border with China.
