Rather, the young people were glad; my grandmother and her peers hated the idea that their sacred church music would now be desecrated by “noise.” This was however not a battle the elders could win. Attendance at church was not just waning, it was aging. These were an unhealthy combination for the growth of a parish or the reputation of its priest. In the end, the music triumphed.

Tuesday 23 February 2021 THE EDITOR: Following my previous reviews, I believe that the virtual offerings from our soca artistes and certain calypsonians during the Carnival 2021 period are still credible but only so much. There is determination though enduring success still awaits. TT should give them an “A” for effort. The problem is that more than effort is needed. First of all, our artistes need to see themselves not only vying for a home-based feteing audience but as competitors in international show business. In other words, they have to think about events that will have as many elements of entertainment as possible.

Kambule film premieres on J Ouvert morning

Kambule film premieres on ‘J’Ouvert morning’ Canboulay re-enactment on February 21, 2020, on Piccaddily Street, Port of Spain. - THE re-enactment of the 1881 Canboulay riots on Piccadilly Greens, Port of Spain, is a large part of the Carnival experience for many people. This year, Kambule the film, a new docudrama about the riots, will be aired on TTT, on what would have been J’Ouvert morning, February 15, at 5 am. The retelling of the classic story is directed by award-winning filmmaker Maya Cozier. The film will premiere as part of a morning of activities dedicated to keeping the spirit of Carnival alive. In a release, Kambule playwright Eintou Springer said, “It’s been an exciting and challenging process taking this play in such a different direction. It has been a joy to work so closely with Maya to realise her vision of how to translate the play to the screen.”

Caribbean Yard Campus offers mas-making course Attendees inspect the creations of the students of the Earth to Sky course in 2019 - Paula Lindo THE Caribbean Yard Campus (CYC) will be offering its Earth to Sky Mas Design, Construction and Performance course beginning on February 6. The course offers an alternative opportunity for mas people wishing to learn new skills and to become qualified in mas building. The programme will last for one year, culminating in Carnival 2022. It is the only programme of its type globally that is fully certified by TT’s National Training Agency, the campus said in a media release.
