Kolkata: Defecting from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not been a good decision for most of the stateâs turncoat MLAs, it seems from the election results. Of the 19 sitting MLAs from the TMC, the Left and the Congress who joined the BJP since 2019 and contested on a BJP ticket this time, only five have managed to win.

In the exchange, which came in an episode of the PBS genealogy show “Finding Your Roots” that premeried Tuesday evening, Wood doesn’t sound enraged. He sounds and looks astonished, awed and hurt. It’s understandable. He’s just been flipping the pages of a book summarizing what the show’s researchers found out about his ancestry. On one page are documents that treat his forerunners as full-fledged people. On another they’re in an inventory of property listed “by gender, age, and color but not by name,” as Gates puts it.
