More than half of Alabama’s counties are shrinking.
Thirty-nine of the state’s 67 counties lost people between 2019 and 2020, according to new estimates released from the U.S. Census Bureau this week. That includes Jefferson and Mobile counties, the two most populous counties in the state.

Of the state’s three largest counties, only Madison - home to Huntsville - is growing. It added nearly 7,000 people between 2019 and 2020, a growth rate of nearly two percent in just one year, according to the estimates.
