TDP, BJP claim moral victory, allege rigging by ruling party
The YSR Congress Party’s camp office in Tirupati erupted in celebrations on Sunday after the party emerged triumphant in the recently held byelection to the Tirupati Lok Sabha constituency.
YSRCP candidate Maddila Gurumoorthy, a physiotherapist by profession scored a thumping victory over TDP candidate and former Union Minister Panabaka Lakshmi. BJP-Jana Sena candidate and former bureaucrat K. Ratna Prabha came in a distant third. Though the YSRCP victory was comprehensive, the margin of victory was much lesser than the ‘five lakh majority’ projected ahead of the polls.

With the second spell of COVID-19 taking a serious turn, the focus is once again on the exorbitant fee being charged by a few private hospitals earmarked for treating virus-affected people.
The meeting conducted by Deputy Chief Minister K. Narayanaswamy, Panchayat Raj Minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy and District Collector M. Hari Narayanan, among others, on Sunday laid emphasis on the issue of “fleecing” by taking advantage of the precarious situation.

Bastar (Chhattisgarh) [India], April 20 (ANI): More than 8,000 square kilometres area of Bastar, one of the worst Naxal-hit region in the country, has now been freed from the clutches of CPI Maoists in recent years, said Inspector General of BastarP Sundarraj on Tuesday.
Sundarraj said this was possible due to more than 24 security camps established in these areas followed by development works initiated by the local administrations. In last few years due to the multi-pronged development and security strategy of the government, the security forces and local administration have made remarkable inroads into the erstwhile stronghold areas of Left Wing Extremists in Dandakaranya area, Sundarraj said.
‘Police remained mute spectators to massive irregularities’
BJP State president Somu Veerraju on Sunday demanded that the byelection to the Tirupati Lok Sabha constituency conducted on Saturday be cancelled and a repoll held as bogus votes were cast on a large scale.
Addressing the media here, Mr. Veerraju alleged that the Ministers and YSRCP leaders had violated the Model Code of Conduct right under the nose of the officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the security forces.
Mr. Veerraju also alleged that the police had remained mute spectators to the “massive irregularities” and that the CRPF personnel were not seen around.
