Why should I cancel the governor?

This fall, we will be asked to decide whether or not to retain Gavin Newsom as our governor. As Republicans across the country decry the unfairness of cancel culture, they demand the cancelling of voting rights, transgender rights, and here in California, the duly elected leader of our state. I believe it’s our duty to learn as much about this process as possible, but more importantly, the reasoning behind this conservative effort to usurp executive power. Keep in mind that California has only had one successful recall of a governor. In 2003, Governor Gray Davis was recalled, and Californians elected Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in his stead.

The property, located at 600 E. Franklin St. in Monterey, will be used as a shelter for women and families experiencing homelessness. “The property is ideal. It’s in the shelter overlay zone, it’s got plenty of water and it’s close to other amenities,” said Robert Rapp, CHS’s Development Director. The building will undergo an estimated $1-$1.5 million renovation in order to house 30-35 beds. Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, faces a boisterous recall effort from disgruntled citizens. While the effort existed prior to the coronavirus crisis, it picked up steam following outrage over coronavirus, lockdowns, and Newsom s own ill-advised trip to a swanky Napa Valley restaurant while his constituents endured pandemic restrictions. It s common for California governors to face recall threats, but it s rare for one to actually lose his or her job in a recall election. Only Democrat Gray Davis was ousted, in 2003, and was ultimately replaced by the Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Updates and FAQs: All About the Effort to Recall California Governor Gavin Newsom – NBC 7 San Diego

Updated on March 24, 2021 at 9:45 am What to Know An effort to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom began June 10, 2020. Petition supporters had until March 17 to collect 1,495,709 valid signatures. The current petition effort is the fifth in a series of six recall petitions filed against Gov. Newsom. The others are currently inactive.  There have been 55 attempts to recall a California governor since 1911. One was successful and ended with voters sending Arnold Schwarzenegger to Sacramento. In 2018, Gavin Newsom, then the lieutenant governor of California, was elected in a landslide as governor of the nation’s most populous state with nearly 62 percent of the vote. Two years and a few months later, it appears increasingly likely that voters will be asked whether he should be ousted from office after one of six recall petition efforts against him gains more signatures.
