With the success of Nomadland during last night s Oscars Ceremony (which nobody watched), the depredations facing American workers at the hands of Amazon are back in the headlines. Just weeks after workers at the company s Bessemer, Ala. fulfillment center, voted overwhelmingly against unionizing, the plant s workers are suing the NLRB alleging that Amazon sabotaged the vote.
As Democrats look to shore up organized labor, formerly a cornerstone of their political base, President Biden has just appointed VP Kamala Harris - who is also in charge of stage-managing the worsening border crisis on Biden s behalf - to lead a new pro-union task force that the president will create with the stroke of a pen on Monday. Biden is expected to sign an executive order creating a task force to promote labor organizing, which Harris will then lead.

Taft Stettinius & Hollister has announced an increase in associate salaries across its various markets in a bid to draw talent in a competitive market.
This action follows a period of some uncertainty for the legal business in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those steps included trimming pay or partner draws, eliminating or reducing pay increases, and furloughing or laying off staff, including some attorneys, according to Crain s research.

Final touches: The House Finance Committee voted 24-9, with two Democrats joining Republicans in voting ‘yes’, to refer House Bill 110, the state budget bill, to the floor for a full vote. As Andrew Tobias reports, the last-minute changes included boosting education funding in the bill by $115 million over two years to ensure poorer districts didn’t lose money in the short term as the bill’s school-funding overhaul is phased in. The House is expected to approve the budget bill as soon as today.
