Tallent, Robert Weston Tuesday, February 23, 2021
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Robert Weston Tallent.
Robert’s story began in May 1951. He was born the youngest of three in Chattanooga. At 17, he graduated from basic training in Fort Ord, Ca., and returned home on leave where he met Becky. Robert and Becky were 19 years old and married on Dec. 24, 1970. They just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary!
Over the next 20 years, the Army gave them the ride of their life! They began their family in 1971, when their son Darrell was born in Germany. Jimmy followed in late 1972 and his baby girl, Erin, was welcomed in 1983. While serving, he was selected to become a warrant officer and proudly executed missions all across the world. He retired from service and they returned to Chattanooga as civilians.

Mr. Robert Weston’s lead letter in the Dec. 6 Cape Gazette (What is wrong with wearing a face mask?), asserts with exclamation point that, “Wearing masks has been clearly shown to protect all parties!” and that “This total disregard for wearing masks is outrageous…”
But, I think that his assertions about population-wide mask wearing are in dispute. Consider this.
The Delphi Research Group out of Carnegie Mellon University tracks mask wearing and here are some statistics as of Oct. 26: Delaware 92.5 percent compliant; Philadelphia 96 percent; Washington, D.C. 97 percent and New York City 97 percent. Similarly, a National Geographic poll said that masks are worn by 92 percent of the public. More than nine in 10 people!
