Northbound I-75 at I-696 closed as crew investigate sinkhole

The Michigan Department of Transportation has closed all lanes of northbound Interstate 75 at I-696 in Oakland County for emergency repairs as crews investigate a nearby sinkhole. The sinkhole was created when crews working to install a drainage tunnel beneath the northbound service drive between 11 Mile Road and Gardenia Avenue, bored into a pocket of groundwater 100 feet below the surface. The rise in water pressure created a sinkhole beneath the service drive. Crews are now investigating the extent of the sinkhole and impact it could have on the safety and integrity of northbound I-75 and the service drive, Robert Morosi, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Transportation, said in an email to the Free Press.
