The Michigan Department of Transportation has closed all lanes of northbound Interstate 75 at I-696 in Oakland County for emergency repairs as crews investigate a nearby sinkhole.
The sinkhole was created when crews working to install a drainage tunnel beneath the northbound service drive between 11 Mile Road and Gardenia Avenue, bored into a pocket of groundwater 100 feet below the surface. The rise in water pressure created a sinkhole beneath the service drive.
Crews are now investigating the extent of the sinkhole and impact it could have on the safety and integrity of northbound I-75 and the service drive, Robert Morosi, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Transportation, said in an email to the Free Press.

A fuel tanker fire that shut both sides of Interstate 75 in Troy caused extensive damage to the entire highway and median and will keep lanes closed for days or weeks as the road is repaired, MDOT officials said Tuesday.
Around 1:15 p.m. Monday on northbound I-75 at the Big Beaver overpass, a tanker truck struck the center median and caught fire, according to Troy police. Police closed northbound I-75 at Rochester Road and southbound I-75 at Crooks Road. MDOT also closed southbound I-75 at Square Lake Road.
In an email to the Free Press, Robert Morosi, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Transportation, said the fire caused significant damage to all lanes in each direction. The heat from the fire severely burned the pavement and compromised the highway s strength and stability, he said.

TROY, Mich. – Sections of Interstate 75 outside Detroit were closed after a fuel tanker caught fire Monday after being involved in an accident, authorities said.
The Michigan Department of Transportation closed both the northbound and southbound lanes of the interstate after the tanker struck a concrete median and burst into flames. Authorities said they didn’t know when the lanes would be reopened.

“MDOT has advised that I-75 will remain closed overnight,” the Troy Police Department tweeted. “Inspection and repair expected to take time.”
According to Robert Morosi with MDOT, the freeway will remain closed overnight and at least through morning rush hour.
