Support Us In a refreshingly heartwarming story earlier this month, the world’s oldest known wild bird has hatched yet another chick. Wisdom the Laysan Albatross is believed to be at least seventy years old, and is nesting in the Midway Atoll national wildlife refuge, a small island in the North Pacific. Wisdom is believed to have hatched the chick sometime in February, but the healthy young bird was only discovered and reported by researchers in early March. Advertisement “Each year that Wisdom returns, we learn more about how long seabirds can live and raise chicks,” said Beth Flint, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s supervisory wildlife biologist at the Pacific Remote Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex, in an interview with NPR. “Her return not only inspires bird lovers everywhere, but helps us better understand ho

Cooking with Offspring - My New Orleans

My New Orleans   Not long ago I bought my son a chef’s knife. He’s 19 and attending college virtually, but he’s going to be there in-person before long and he’s expressed an interest in cooking. Recently he asked whether we could get together and make a dish called confit biyaldi – it’s the variation on ratatouille that was featured in the movie of the same name. I did a deep dive on ratatouille about five years ago, and I cooked multiple versions of the dish, including the rat’s version, which is generally attributed to Chef Michel Guérard, one of the founders of

My Annual Birthday Joke, Houston Food Bank and Felix s at the Lakefront

My New Orleans 03/04/2021   I would first of all like to thank those of you who’ve already sent me birthday wishes. This year the celebration of my entry into the world falls on a Sunday, and I am told that because of the pandemic the parade has been canceled. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I hope that you will all celebrate in your own way and at your own pace. For my gift to myself, I bought a blender. It’s a Vitamix that I found on sale online and it has been refurbished, but it is still far more expensive than the last blender I bought at Wal-Mart, where my purchasing philosophy is, “I’ll buy the second least expensive model, because that saves money and hey it could be worse.”

Meals at Restaurants and Takeout, Too - My New Orleans

My New Orleans 02/25/2021   My wife and I have, for the most part, been ordering takeout rather than dining in restaurants because there is a pandemic and we have family at a higher risk of bad outcomes from exposure to the virus than most. Including, as my wife points out, me. I have, however, had two meals in the last week or so about which I can report. The first was with my son, at the Dat Dog location on Freret Street. There’s really no better place to eat a hot dog than that patio, and while their menu is a bit abbreviated at the moment, I enjoyed the hell out of my Chicago-style and my son ate every bit of his crawfish etouffee dog.
