A bicyclist who was bitten by an alligator after falling into the water at a Stuart park Monday is recovering.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. â A bicyclist who was bitten by an alligator after falling into the water at a Stuart park Monday is recovering.
Palm City resident Robert Bassett, 74, was smiling and sitting up in his hospital bed as he posed for a photograph with his doctor in a picture provided by Lawnwood Regional Medical Center on Tuesday.
A Treasure Coast man remains hospitalized in serious condition after a gator attack on Monday.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says Robert Bassett of Palm City was riding on a bike trail inside Halpatiokee Regional Park in Stuart, when he fell off the bike and wound up in a stream.
Charles Shannon says he came upon Bassett while the man was struggling with the alligator.
“He was saying, help me get out of the water. He was pretty far down, so I was able to get down there with the help of this young man that hold me. I was able to drag him out of the water.”

Robert Bassett of Palm City was taking a ride in Halpatiokee Regional Park. He fell and landed in a stream and was viciously attacked by a 9 foot gator. Thankfully, a bystander and a nurse were close by and came to Bassett s rescue.
A Florida man was seriously injured Monday morning after he was bit by an alligator.
According to the Martin County Sheriff Office, the incident happened around 11 AM at Halpatiokee Park in Stuart.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Robert Bassett of Palm City fell off his bike and landed in a nearby stream where he was bitten by the eight-and-a-half feet long alligator.
According to the trapper who removed the gator, the bicyclist slipped off the trail, causing him to fall down a six-foot embankment into a creek. The trapper believes the bicyclist landed on top of, or near the alligator, which prompted the attack. The trapper also believes the female alligator likely had a nest of babies or eggs nearby.
