A large digital billboard proposed for the side of Queenstown’s Crowne Plaza hotel has attracted nearly 50 submissions.
As revealed in Mountain Scene on March 11, the 34 square metre billboard will display advertising aimed at pedestrians and motorists heading west on Shotover Street.
The vast majority of submissions on Bigavision Ltd’s resource consent application to Queenstown’s council are strongly opposed, variously labelling the billboard ‘‘offensive’’, ‘‘a monstrosity’’, ‘‘dangerous’’, the ‘‘thin edge of the wedge’’, and likely to ‘‘destroy the character of Queenstown’’.
Billboard messages would change at least every 60 seconds, but not feature flashing images or animation.

The recreational area would be a safe area for non-motorised craft and swimmers to use, without fear of collisions with motorised craft.
Donaghadee Harbour lies on the north County Down coast and is a picturesque port in which the lifeboat Saxon has its home along with several boats on moorings and some small working fishing and tourist vessels. It has always been an irresistible attraction for those keen on jumping into and swimming in the sheltered (in most wind directions) waters.

UK Lawmakers to Fight for Genocide Amendment as Compromise Version Pushed Through
The UK Parliament on Tuesday passed a compromise version of an amendment to its post-Brexit Trade Bill on curbing trade with genocidal countries.
The amendment (pdf), proposed by Conservative MP Robert Neill and backed by the government, was put before MPs instead of Lord Alton’s original version, which won by a two-thirds majority in the House of Lords on Feb. 3.
While the government argued that Neill’s amendment is “superior,” supporters of the original amendment condemned the government for tabling what they called a “wrecking amendment,” and vowed to keep fighting for the original one.
