CUSD appoints District Safety Coordinator
The Carlsbad Unified School District has appointed Malcolm Warfield as the District Safety Coordinator, a new part-time position. Warfield has more than 17 years of law enforcement experience, previously working as a deputy sheriff with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, and as a law officer with the Lakewood (Colo.) Police Department and a police officer with the Carlsbad Police Department. He is an active member of the California State Juvenile Officers Association, and is an associate faculty member at MiraCosta College. Warfield will serve in a dual role as the Juvenile Justice Program Coordinator for the Carlsbad Police Department and as the Carlsbad school district’s safety coordinator. In his work with the district, he will be the district liaison for School Resource Officers and first responders; will oversee and evaluate site safety plans; and do ongoing evaluation of site security needs.

Cameron County on Monday reported four coronavirus-related deaths and 173 positive cases of COVID-19.
Three people over the age of 40 from Harlingen and a man in his 70 s from Rancho Viejo died as a result of the virus, according to a news release from Cameron County.
Since the pandemic began, the county has reported 1,698 deaths related to the coronavirus.
The people who tested positive in the county are in the following age groups:
• 68 people under the age of 20

“People are clearly suffering out there,” Commissioner Anna Hansen said.
County commissioners approved a $185,318 expenditure for the waterline Tuesday on a 4-0 vote with District 3 Commissioner Rudy Garcia absent.
The county had already been planning a permanent waterline to the area estimated to be complete by March 2022. The permanent water line will connect residents to the Buckman Direct Diversion water supply through the Rancho Viejo storage tank.
Commissioners thanked county staff for their quick response to the problem.
“Providing these necessities that our constituents need is something that needs to always be in the forefront,” said Henry Roybal, the commission chairman. “I’m really proud of the fact that we took care of this and that we are moving forward.”
