Around 50 houses were gobbled up by the Ganga in a 12-hour period since Saturday night because of the erosion of the left bank at Baishnabnagar in Malda district.
Hundreds of residents have started shifting to safer places since Sunday morning as the river is gulping chunks of land every hour. After repeated alerts from the state irrigation department, the Farakka Barrage Project (FBP) Authority has started anti-erosion works at Baishnabnagar that comes under the Kaliachak 3 block.

Sources said the Ganga had started eroding land in the Bhimagram-Hatkhola area of Baishnabnagar on Saturday night.

Police have arrested a man on charge of raping a teenage girl in Khulna s Rupsha upazila today.
The arrestee was identified as Rajib Sheikh (30), our Khulna correspondent reports quoting Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Rupsha Police Station.
He was arrested from Pithbhog village of the upazila around 6:30pm, said the OC.
Quoting family members of the victim, OC Sirajul Islam said, Rajib Sheikh forcefully took the victim to his house when the victim was going to a tailor shop on Sunday morning and raped her there.
The victim later disclosed the matter to her family members and the victim s mother filed a rape case against Rajib with Rupsha police facility the following day.

SUKKUR: The body of an 18-month-old missing girl, who disappeared 10 days ago, was recovered from a sewerage drain near Faizabad Colony of Khairpur.Reports said an 18-month-old girl, Farwa d/o Rajib Sheikh, had gone missing from her house in Faizabad Colony in Khairpur and after 10 days, her body was recovered from a drain outside her house. Meanwhile, the parents of the missing girl had been searching her at their relatives and neighbours but could not find any clue. They informed the police about the mysterious disappearance of their daughter from the house.
