Citizens encouraged to apply for Rockdale Board of Elections board vacancy - On Common Ground News

Testingfg of Ads ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA– The Rockdale County Board of Elections and Registration is seeking a new at-large board member who will also serve as its board chair. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, July 28, 2021.     The board is comprised of three members with two partisan members from each political party who then appoint a third at-large member. The newly-selected at-large board member will serve a two-year term ending June 30, 2023.    Board member responsibilities include the oversight of county elections, discussion of and decisions pertaining to election policies, and ongoing communication with the public.    Board members are not involved in the day-to-day operations of the Elections Office or in administrative decisions. Georgia Election Code 21-2-70 provides for the powers and duties of the Board of Elections and Registration.

Phyllis Hatcher Pastor and businesswoman Phyllis Hatcher will officially announce her candidacy for Georgia’s 10th Congressional District on Saturday, July 17, in three district locations. The announcements will begin at 9 a.m. at the Red Caboose in Auburn, 1361 Fourth Ave., followed by noon on the Clarke County Courthouse steps at 325 East Washington St., Athens, and conclude on the steps of the Hancock County Courthouse, 12630 Broad St., Sparta at 4 p.m. “I support Phyllis Hatcher’s candidacy for Georgia’s 10th Congressional District,” said Carlotta Harrell, president of Georgia Federation of Democratic Women and chair of the Henry Board of Commissioners. “We need more dedicated women and people of color representing us in Congress.”

Fireworks, festivities slated for Independence Day weekend

Fireworks will once again brighten the skies the east metro area with several Fourth of July celebrations set to take place over the holiday weekend. After a pandemic hiatus last year, Conyers’ Independence Day celebration — Red, White & Boom! — returns this year on July 3 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The city of Conyers and Rockdale County governments have partnered to bring back Independence Day fireworks to the heart of Olde Town on Saturday, July 3, from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. “After missing out on the July 4 celebration in 2020 due to the pandemic, I am very excited that we’re able to bring this popular event back this year with a fabulous fireworks show. This will be yet another great event that will allow us to feel that things are truly getting back to the way they were,” said Mayor Vince Evans.
