City Council members were stunned last week by the news that electric scooter rental company Bird hoped to bring 50 vehicles to Mexico.
“It sounds a little dangerous and off the wall,” chairman pro tem Vicki Briggs.
The company provides rechargeable stand up scooters that can travel at speeds up to 17 miles per hour. Riders pay electronically and are charged per minute, dropping the scooters where their trip ends.

In what they hope is the wake of the pandemic, leaders in Audrain County are looking forward – and back.
On Friday representatives from business, education, agriculture, finance, government and other sectors gathered at the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce with members of the Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments to both identify tools that should be in place should another disaster strike and to look at what went well.
“It’s been a normal year,” he told the City County on Monday.
COVID-19 caused a spike in unemployment that exceeded the levels seen during the recession. But the damage was temporary. And Runge counts more positives than negatives when it comes to the city’s economic state as the year comes to a close.
The average wage is up, both on an annual and hourly basis. Meanwhile the unemployment rate has dropped to 3 percent, down from its peak of 10.3 percent in April and May, as the pandemic roiled the economy.
“Some good things have happened,” Runge said.
The average annual wage is $37,289 as of 2019, up from $36,336 the year before.
