Protecting the children, schools Russell Barker/Guest Column After hearing the news yesterday (May 5) that Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon, has withdrawn from the agreement to provide police for schools, I began reflecting on how fortunate we are in Anderson County.  First, the decision to remove law enforcement from the schools is beyond comprehension. The safety of our educators and students should never be the scapegoat for the political posturing we witnessed yesterday. We are talking about our most vulnerable members of society and such amazing educators falling prey to politics. Differences of opinions will always exist, but never did I think it would jeopardize the safety of a school system.

04 May 2021 Russell Barker is a charter member of the Hellyer Brigade, and over his 40 years has seen fire fighting methods change dramatically. “When I first started all we had was beaters to bash the flames out and knapsacks,” he said. The equipment was less than ideal, with the beaters being made up of sticks with leather scraps on the end, with firefighters flapping the sticks at the flames in the hopes of smothering it out. “Wasn’t real good in a house fire,” he laughed. Since then, the Brigade has evolved slowly with time, with Russell remembering the club receiving a water cart.

Obituaries Obituary Anderson County Sheriff s Office reportedly found a suspect wanted in Ohio, hiding inside First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge on Sunday. The city of Oak Ridge reported in an email that the suspect, identified as Casey John Jones, 30, of Columbus, Ohio, was wanted by authorities in Ohio with full extradition. The charges in Ohio were reportedly narcotics- and weapons-related, and officials were informed that Jones should be considered armed and dangerous. The Rev. Mark Flynn told The Oak Ridger no one was injured during the incident. The man reportedly fled inside the church in between church services on Sunday.
