Cubs roster moves: Jake Arrieta, Nico Hoerner activated from IL, Nick Martini, Jason Adam optioned Share this story Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports Jake Arrieta had a cut on his right thumb, officially termed an “abrasion,” during his last start against the Reds on April 30. The start did not go well and Jake was placed on the injured list. Nico Hoerner was involved in a collision with Ian Happ two days after that in Cincinnati. (Is that place dangerous?) Both players were activated from the injured list for Friday’s game against the Tigers at Comerica Park. Arrieta will get the start, his first in two weeks.

We kept pushing forward.” The flyover is the final section of the $64 million project, which stretches 18 miles from South 71st to Hollywood.

Cubs take doubleheader from Dodgers - Chicago Sun-Times

Getty Images Coming off a 13-12 loss Sunday in a slugfest with the Reds and a postponement because of inclement weather Monday, the Cubs came out ready Tuesday in their doubleheader against the World Series champion Dodgers. As the starting pitching has taken a step back recently, it has been the offense that has had to take a step forward. The bats continued to show they’re on the upswing in opener against the Dodgers. The offense looked sluggish to start the season, but it has hit its stride during the last two weeks. The Cubs are averaging 6.8 runs since April 26 and didn’t wait around in their 7-1 victory in the opener, scoring four runs in the first inning against Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by David Bote.

Cubs Roster Moves: Hoerner, Arrieta, Winkler to the IL; Ryan, Thompson, Vargas Up

A flurry of roster moves today for the Cubs in advance of the doubleheader, and not just the call-up of the free 27th man you get on doubleheader days. In fact, by my count, the Cubs haven’t announced that part yet. Instead, it’s a trio of players going to the Injured List, and Ian Happ isn’t even one of them: Cubs moves this morning: • INF Nico Hoerner to 10-day IL (left forearm strain) • RHP Dan Winkler to 10-day IL (right triceps tendinitis) • LHP Kyle Ryan, RHP Keegan Thompson, INF Ildemaro Vargas called up. OK. So then you’ve got Arrieta going to the IL instead of trying to pitch through the cut on his thumb again – it went very badly last time. You’ve got the fallout for Hoerner from the collision with Happ in the outfield, which sucks and is hopefully not too serious given how he was looking at the plate this year. You’ve got Winkler dealing with triceps tendinitis, which is something nothing and sometimes scary (anything attached to the elbow always
