Architects say they want newly re-elected London mayor Sadiq Khan to deliver on his promise to build thousands of affordable homes across the capital
In his manifesto, Khan unveiled an array of housing pledges and said his ‘relentless focus’ would be on building more council and ‘genuinely affordable’ homes. He has set a target of building 10,000 council homes in the next four years.

He also promised to set up a City Hall housebuilder to directly build low-cost homes for London, the ‘first of its kind in a generation’, and commission an independent review to ‘streamline housing development across the wider GLA group’.

RCKa has won approval to build a modular, 39-unit hostel for Camden Council in north London
The scheme in Camden Road will replace an existing hostel building, which comprised one-bedroom studios and was ‘not designed to meet the needs of families’.

The new building will contain apartments for multiple family members, two one-bed homes and a single wheelchair accommodation on the ground floor.
A key feature will be a multipurpose terrace which, the practice says, will ‘encourage social interaction between neighbours’ and features a rear community courtyard with a garden room.

The National Gallery’s announcement of an open competition for an architect-led team to design a £30m project is a rare burst of sunshine in this long winter of covid. The chance to get your hands on two of the country’s most important buildings is a mouthwatering opportunity.
When the news broke after a midnight embargo there were excited emails between engineers and architects saying, “Have you seen this?” You can almost hear the sharpening of pencils, although organiser Malcolm Reading tells us no design work is required. There won’t be too many architectural competitions of this size from cultural institutions in the foreseeable future.
