Pierre, SD, USA / DRGNews Feb 25, 2021 9:00 PM RAPID CITY – Pierre Governor boys wrestling stands fourth in Class A after the first round of SDHSAA State Wrestling at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Brandon Valley and Watertown share the lead after the first day of individual competition with 35 points. Defending champion Rapid City Stevens is third with 28 points, followed by the Governors’ 25. Nine Pierre wrestlers advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal matches. Blake Judson won his first-round match at 126 pounds, with Kahlor Hindman winning at 132, Hayden Shaffer at 138, Tyson Johnson at 145, Deegan Houska at 152, Gavin Stotts at 182, Jacob Larson at 195, Regan Bollweg at 220 and Preston Taylor at 285. Judson, Bollweg and Taylor had pins. Shaffer and Houska won by major decision. The others won by decision.

This year, the state wrestling tournaments will look a tad different. Because of COVID-19 protocols, a decision was made to split up the two classes, A and B, into their own venues. While both classes are at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center complex, Class A is being housed at the Ice Arena, while the Barnett Arena will host Class B.

2021 South Dakota High School Boys, Girls Wrestling Championships

537 athletes will head to Rapid City to participate in the 2021 South Dakota high school wrestling championships this upcoming weekend. The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center will host this year s combined tournament on February 25-27. All classes and events will take place in Rapid City as part of the combined event. The 2021 South Dakota high school wrestling championships will be a little different this year, and it s not strictly because of the pandemic. This year s event will feature the standard weight tournaments, a duals tournament, and also the girl s weight classes for the first time. In total, 537 athletes from around South Dakota will wrestle for state championships. 88 girls qualified for the state tournament this season. Canton leads all schools in all classes with 29 total athletes that qualified for state. Pierre added 22.
