Uganda has affirmed its continued use of the Port of Mombasa and commitment to enhancing infrastructure along the Northern Corridor, a boost to the Kenyan seaport.
While the landlocked country has the option to use neighbouring Dar es Salaam Port (Tanzania), through the region’s Central Corridor trade route, it has remained the biggest destination for transit cargo through Mombasa, which is connected to the hinterland via the Northern Corridor.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has assured Uganda and the transit market of efficient service delivery on clearance of outbound cargo as long as port users provide the necessary documentation.
While lauding Uganda as a valuable customer, KPA acting managing director Rashid Salim said the authority had opened a liaison office in Kampala for the importers and exporters in the country to ensure efficiency in service delivery.
Engineer Salim spoke yesterday when he received a Ugandan delegation led by the new Ugandan Consul General to Mombasa, Ambassador Paul Mukumbya.

The volume of cargo handled at Mombasa port has increased despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
The port handled 9.54 million tonnes of cargo in the first three months of this year, up from 8.62 million tonnes it processed in the same period last year.
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) said on Friday that the 10.7 per cent growth in business was due to increased efficiency at the facility and the opening up of other ports such as those in China.
In the latest report, KPA said the port recorded the highest performance in terms of average container traffic, handling an average of 4,662 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) per day.
