Three Portuguese border guards have been jailed for beating to death a Ukrainian jobseeker after he arrived without a valid visa.
The guards kicked, punched and struck Ihor Homenyuk, 40, with batons at a Lisbon airport detention centre last year.
They have been sentenced to between seven and nine years in prison.
The death has shocked the country and forced the government to disband the border service.
Mr Homenyuk, a father of two, arrived in the Portuguese capital without a valid visa in March last year to look for work. He was refused entry, and transferred to a detention centre after refusing to board a flight back home.

Three Portuguese border officers were sentenced to several years in jail on Monday, in a much-awaited ruling over the fatal beating last year of a Ukrainian man in a Lisbon airport.
The Lisbon court found that Ihor Homeniuk, 42, was kicked, beaten, handcuffed with his hands and legs taped and then left to slowly asphyxiate on the floor of a room at a detention centre at the airport. He had come to Portugal to look for work.
Homeniuk s death sent shock waves across the nation, ultimately leading to the abolishment of the border service last month amid calls from human right advocates to tackle abuses. read more

A Lisbon court found that the inspectors kicked and beat the handcuffed Ihor Homeniuk with batons, breaking his ribs and causing death by asphyxiation. It happened on March 12, 2020, in the temporary reception centre at Lisbon airport.
He had arrived in Portugal by plane two days earlier from Turkey without a valid visa, in search of work.
Homeniuk was immediately detained by immigration authorities for deportation after refusing to board a flight out of the country.
On Monday, three police officials were sentenced to between seven and nine years in prison over the 40-year-old man s death.
