Defence Minister Rajnath Singh invoked emergency provisions on Friday to grant the Armed Forces special powers. This decision will enable the Armed Forces to set up and operate Covid-19 quarantine centres and hospitals.
With the coronavirus pandemic continuing to wreak havoc in India, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a video conference with his top commanders and officials for the second time this week, to review the efforts of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the military in combating the crisis. As in the first meeting on Tuesday, Rajnath directed the military to deploy all its resources to aid the government and administration in managing the situation. “He said, people look up to the armed forces in times of crisis as they have great hope and trust in them,” said a MoD press release on Saturday.

While taking to Twitter, Singh informed that during the meeting, they both reviewed the full range of bilateral defence ties and exchanged views to further strengthen defence cooperation, including through training, defence exercises and capacity building. The two ministers also agreed that sides must look at the possibility of defence industrial collaboration of mutual interest.
