Eala, 16, squandered a strong start and eventually lost to 17-year-old Mintegi Del Olmo of Spain, 6-3, 4-6, 5-7, in the singles tournament on Thursday night, July 8 (Manila time). The second seeded Eala overcame late double faults to take the opening set then erased a 0-4 deficit in the second only to fall against her unseeded foe. Eala once again came from behind to snag a 5-4 advantage in the third set but Del Olmo dug deep to outlast the young Filipino tennis star.

Published April 9, 2021, 12:02 PM Photo from Alex Eala’s Facebook page Unable to sustain a strong start, Alex Eala crashed out of the W60 Bellinzona tournament in Switzerland after faltering against hometown bet Simona Waltert, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, in the third round on Thursday (early Friday morning in Manila).  Eala, 15, zoomed to a 4-1 lead in the opening set but the 20-year-old Waltert staged a furious comeback to win six of the next seven games.  The Filipino teen tennis star bounced back in the second set as she once again went on a fiery 5-1 start and foiled her Swiss rival’s fightback this time. 

Alex Eala sustains rise in WTA singles rankings

By Senior Reporter ALEX Eala of the Philippines has sustained her ascent in the world rankings, now at a career-high 763 in the latest list released by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). Fifteen-year-old Eala saw her rankings climb by 140 points from her previous spot built on strong showing in recent tournaments she participated in. Ms. Eala, a Rafa Nadal Academy scholar and longtime Globe ambassador, won her first professional women’s singles title when she defeated Spanish player Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers in the finals of the first leg of the Rafael Nadal Academy ITF World Tennis Tour in Mallorca, Spain, last month.
