A Tax Rate Bylaw was adopted by Whitecourt council during its regular meeting May 10, confirming the previously forecast 1.99 per cent municipal increase for residential and non-residential property.
The bylaw follows the 2021 $38.7 million operating budget and $12.5 million capital budget approved by council in April.

“What this would look like for the average residential ratepayer with a home assessed at $300,000 … is an increase in annual taxes of about $60,” Judy Barney, town director of corporate services, told council.
“This is as compared to last year, where we saw a reduction, because we had a decrease in the tax rate, of $118.

The town will take steps to improve traffic safety at 55th Ave. and 47th St., near Spanish Villa.

“I think there’s tremendous value in making our roads safer,” said Coun. Ray Hilts.
Administration recommended extending the no-parking section, adding flashing signs to the area (showing drivers their speeds) for approximately two weeks and increasing enforcement presence.
According to administration, the steps won’t add any expenses to the operating budget already approved.
