The Japanese government announced plans to dump more than 1 million tons of treated wastewater from the ruined Fukushima power plant into the Pacific Ocean.
The plant was destroyed by the 2011 9.0 magnitude earthquake and the almost 50 feet high tsunami. The effects of the catastrophe were so massive that around 20,000 people in northeast Japan were left either dead or missing.
The water that’s been used at the plant to cool its machine has been steadily accumulating in the plant’s storage tanks ever since. The site’s operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), now projects that by next summer, there will be insufficient space to hold the massive 1.25 tons of wastewater.
