The UK version of The Masked Singer on ITV
Global streamer Amazon Prime Video is taking Korean format The Masked Singer to Japan, with the series set to begin on September 3 as an Amazon original.
Local actor Yo Oizumi will host the show, in which disguised celebrities sing for a panel of judges who must try to guess their identity. One celebrity is crowned the winner in the series finale.
The show debuted in South Korea in 2015 as King of Masked Singer, which was created by and aired on local broadcaster MBC. So far, the format has been sold into more than 40 countries worldwide, including the US on Fox and the UK on ITV.
During the first coronavirus shutdown in Japan last year, Daihachi Yoshida had an epiphany.
“I live in the suburbs, and when I went to a local bookstore, the queue for the cash register was longer than I’d ever seen before,” he recalls. “Everyone had been staying at home, and they’d gotten sick of watching TV, so they’d go there…. It gave me a bit of encouragement: in times like that, people still come back to books.”
The public’s reading habits are a subject of particular interest to the 57-year-old filmmaker, whose latest movie takes a deep dive into the troubled waters of Japan’s publishing industry.

With the new year comes a new yearlong, weekly historical drama series from Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK. This year’s is “Seiten o Tsuke,” which is about Shibusawa Eiichi, often called the father of Japanese capitalism, one of the most important figures of the Meiji Era (1868-1912) and the man who founded the first bank in Japan based on joint stock ownership. Shibusawa’s face will grace the new ¥10,000 bills.
He is being played by Ryo Yoshizawa, who turns 27 on Feb. 1. Yoshizawa first gained popularity in 2011, when he was still a teenager, on the superhero TV show “Kamen Rider Fourze,” and became known to a wider audience with the 2018 theatrical film “River’s Edge,” for which he received the newcomer’s award from the judges of the Japan Academy Film Prize. The Red and White Music Festival, known most commonly in Japan as “Kohaku,” will be aired in Southern California this year beginning at noon on Dec. 31, and again at noon on Jan. 1, over KXLA Channel 44.1.
The broadcast is presented by Japan Hollywood Network, and can be received over the air for free across the Los Angeles County and Orange County area. The station is also included in most local cable system lineups.
