Several houses and buildings were damaged after an
earthquake of magnitude 6.4 on the Richter scale hit Assam around 8 am on Wednesday. Six aftershocks, of magnitude ranging from 3.2 to 4.7, occurred in the two-and-a-half hours following the main tremor.
Senior Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on Twitter that the epicentre was in Dhekiajuli town in the state s Sonitpur district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and assured all help from the Centre.

The primary earthquake had its epicentre at latitude 26.690 N and longitude 92.360 E, about 80 km northeast of Guwahati, and a focal depth of 17 km, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

(Eds: With fresh inputs) Guwahati/New Delhi, Apr 28 (PTI) A series of earthquakes jolted Assam and most of the Northeastern states on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to buildings and forcing people to scamper out of their homes. There were no immediate reports of deaths directly due to the tremors, but two persons - one each in Kamrup Metropolitan and Nagaon districts - died due to shock and heart attack around the time of the earthquake, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said. According to initial reports, 10 people suffered injuries in four districts as the first quake of 6.4 magnitude struck Tezpur, the headquarters of Sonitpur district, at 7.51 am, the ASDMA said in a statement.

Bureau warns of aftershocks after two strong quakes

The nation was on Sunday rocked by two consecutive earthquakes in Hualien County, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday, adding that aftershocks greater than magnitude 5 could occur in the next two or three days.
No casualties were reported as of yesterday.
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred at 10:11pm, with the epicenter 19.2km southwest of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 15km. Three minutes later, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck 20.2km southwest of the county hall at a depth of 13.9km, bureau data showed. The epicenter of both quakes was in Shoufong Township (壽豐).
