USS Constitution to reopen to public on May 21 The Associated Press 6 hours ago The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds fly over the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor during a Salute to Great Cities of the American Revolution on July 4, 2020. (Mark Herlihy/Air Force) BOSTON The USS Constitution will make its way across Boston Harbor and reopen to the public on May 21. The underway will be broadcast live on the Navy’s Facebook page and will feature demonstrations on climbing, firing a 24-pound long gun, using shipboard weaponry, and will conclude with a 21-gun salute, according to a statement Tuesday from the Navy.
Today restored to museum quality and lovingly cared for by a U.S. Navy crew, the USS
Constitution, “Old Ironsides,” is the living symbol of America’s first generation of warships, built in response to external threats that a young United States would have preferred to ignore. It would, however, be foolish to presume that her fame and success came from divine intervention and manifest destiny. The fine fighting and sailing qualities of the
Constitution and her sister ships were more than just providence shining on a new nation with promise. On the contrary, much of the legend that became “Old Ironsides” was designed into her, long before the first timbers were cut and shaped.

A Savannah native, U.S. Navy Airman Tasheyana Harden, is now serving aboard the USS
Constitution − the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat − with the crew of active-duty sailors who provide free tours and offer public visitation aboard the two-century-old sailing vessel.
Now based at Boston’s Charlestown Navy Yard, the USS
Constitution was authorized for construction by President George Washington in 1794, and was successfully launched on its third attempt in 1797. While the USS
Constitution and its related museum are currently closed to visitors as a COVID-19 precaution, duty aboard the historic ship is one of the Navy’s special programs, and all prospective crew members must meet a high standard of sustained excellence and interview to be selected for the assignment.
