Stitching together strength: Crocheting helps Alton woman regain normalcy

Stitching together strength: Crocheting helps Alton woman regain normalcy The Telegraph FacebookTwitterEmail Alton Memorial Rehabilitation and Therapy’s Tonya Grant, left, program director of the therapy department, learns a stitch from resident Evelyn Elmore, whose love of crocheting reignited and restored her happiness when Grant began crocheting with her. Elmore has helped Grant improve her crocheting skills, too, and make crocheting something now Grant loves to do. ALTON After 76 years of crocheting, making everything from bedspreads to blankets to infant hats, Evelyn Elmore didn’t have the desire to crochet anymore. For the past six months or so, Elmore, 86, has been at Alton Memorial Rehabilitation and Therapy (formerly Eunice Smith Home), where she was admitted for a non-COVID-related illness. When she arrived, she was so weak she couldn’t walk, and it was going to take a long time and a lot of therapy for her to regain her strength.
