Reports of rail tracks and clips being removed by hoodlums are being reported throughout the parts of Nigeria where railways are found. The month of May 2021 has been a nightmarish one for the struggling Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, as no fewer than five instances of the vandalisation of its rail furniture were reported. On May 8, 2021, three people were arrested in Kaduna State in connection with the Kaduna – Kano line vandalism. On May 14, five were caught violating the Warri -Itakpe line. Also, another five were nabbed dismantling the rail line at Dalle village in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State; while yet another incidence was reported in Enugu at about the same time.

ADVERTISEMENT The Special Adviser to the Governor of Nasarawa State on Infrastructure, Yusuf Musa, has been arrested for his alleged role in the vandalism of railway tracks. This was announced by the Nasarawa State police commissioner, Bola Longe, while parading Mr Musa and other suspects at the Force Headquarters in Lafia on Thursday. Mr Longe, in a press release obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, said the suspects, including police officers, were nabbed following the intelligence information received by the command. According to him, the suspects have “turned the Nigerian railway tracks that traverse some major cities and villages in Nasarawa State en route to Benue state to gold mines where they vandalise and cart away rail tracks.”

Dalhatu in a statement in Abuja on Monday disclosed that the interceptions were made at various locations between October and December, 2020 within Edo and environs based on credible intelligence. He quoted the Team Leader, a Deputy Comptroller, Mr Yusuf Musa, as disclosing the seizures made by his team to include 66 sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 1056 kg and 54 cartons of medicaments. According to Musa, others are six bales of second hand clothing, 18,640 pieces of wrist watch, 40 bales of wrappers and eight sacks of children’s wears.
