On February 16, Canada s governing Liberal Party finally moved to enact long-promised reforms to criminal justice by introducing a sweeping new bill that would make arrests for drug possession only one option for police, end all mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses, end some other mandatory minimums, and open the way for conditional (probationary) sentences for a variety of offenses. The Yukon government is inching toward establishing an effective framework to controlling the use of off-road vehicles. The territory is one of the few jurisdictions in Canada that doesn’t have a practical and implemented template for managing the popular vehicles. They include quads, side-by-sides, amphibious vehicles such as ARGOs, mini-bikes, dirt bikes and any motor vehicle that’s being driven elsewhere than a highway, regardless of whether it’s registered under the Motor Vehicles Act.  That’s about to change, although it will take some time to set up all of the framework for the new regulation announced Thursday.

Yukon to begin regulation of off-road vehicles in alpine areas

They include two special protection areas and all alpine areas managed by the government that have an elevation of more than 1,400 metres, said Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Ranj Pillai on Thursday. A new regulation passed by the government gives more control over where off-road vehicles can be used, said Pillai, adding that regulating off-road vehicles is contentious.
