Punjab observes SOPs week amid 4th wave fears

LAHORE: The Punjab government will observe a week for the implementation of coronavirus standard operating procedures (SOPs) and vaccinations until July 18 the week before Eidul Adha as authorities braced for a Delta-variant driven fourth wave of Covid-19.
The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by provincial Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid and the chief secretary at the Civil Secretariat on Saturday. She said the purpose of observing the week was to contain the spread of the virus on Eid.
The development came as Pakistan recorded 1,828 new infections, the largest increase in cases in more than two months. Single-day deaths also rose to 35, the highest in over two weeks.

In line with the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) guidelines to contain the virus, the Punjab home department has set up a provincial control room for monitoring, issuing directions to all the administrative and police officers to form teams to check the SOPs violations at markets, parks, restaurants, wedding halls and other public places.
Meanwhile, the Kasur health CEO has been transferred for poor performance during the vaccination drive.

Travis Brooks is in the running to replace outgoing chair Leslyn McBean-Clairborne, who decided not to run again after spending 20 years as the legislator. Brooks defeated Nicole LaFave by 34 votes, 396-362. Brooks won the first ward 181 votes to LaFaveâs 105, while LaFave was favored in the second ward, 257 votes to Brooksâ 215.
Brooks is the deputy director of the Greater Ithaca Activities Center, where he manages programs focused on education, development and sustainability. Heâs also the director of Ithacaâs My Brotherâs Keeper, a program launched by President Barack Obama designed to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color. He was also heavily involved in the Reimagining Public Safety collaborative between the city and the county, and will continue to serve on the newly created task force to work on the implementation of the plan.
