Farmers lose NT$400m amid water shortage

Agricultural losses caused by the current water shortage have exceeded NT$400 million (US$14.07 million), with farmers in Pingtung County affected the most, Council of Agriculture data showed yesterday.
As of Friday, agricultural losses nationwide totaled NT$401.8 million, with the losses in Pingtung reaching NT$352 million, or 88 percent of the total, followed by Nantou County’s NT$21.42 million (5 percent) and Chiayi County’s NT$13.95 million (3 percent), the data showed.
Agricultural losses in Kaohsiung and Yunlin County were NT$13.62 million and NT$810,000 respectively, it showed.

COA to help farmers amid shortage of cardboard boxes

Taipei, April 10 (CNA) The Council of Agriculture (COA) on Saturday assured farmers that it will help those facing shortages of cardboard cartons to pack their produce amid the continued rise in international pulp prices.
Yao Chih-wang (姚志旺), deputy director of the COA s Agriculture and Food Agency, told CNA that it is working with local farmers associations and suppliers in Taiwan to allocate any stocks of cartons that are available to farmers in need.
According to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Tsai Yi-yu (蔡易餘), many farmers in Chiayi County have complained about not being able to find enough cardboard cartons for their goods, and some said they faced three-month lead times from carton suppliers.
Taiwanese bananas recalled in Japan for excess fungicides

Taipei, March 13 (CNA) Taiwan s Council of Agriculture (COA) confirmed Saturday that a Japanese importer has recalled some 750 cartons of Taiwanese bananas due to excessive levels of a fungicide, but said it was an isolated case and was not expected to affect exports to Japan.
According to a report by Apple Daily, the Japanese firm Wismettac Foods Inc. issued a recall notice on Wednesday for 750 cartons of Taiwanese bananas it distributed between March 1-3, after tests found levels of the fungicide Pyraclostrobin at 0.12 parts per million an amount six times above the legal limit.
