The New York State Public Service Commission has approved the sale of the Indian Point nuclear power facility to Holtec International. Entergy – the previous owner – shut down the Westchester County plant at the end of April.
Under an agreement with the state, the county and area stakeholders, Holtec is tasked with decommissioning the facility and remediating the site. Holtec is required to maintain minimum balances in its decommissioning fund and a consent order mandates an on-site monitor.
Per the agreement, the state attorney general, Riverkeeper, the Town of Cortlandt, and the Hendrick Hudson School District were to withdraw their lawsuits against the Nuclear Regulatory Commission concerning the decommissioning process.
