Taoyuan factory ordered to suspend production in wake of blaze

Taipei, Dec. 21 (CNA) The Taoyuan Office of Labor Inspection on Monday ordered a local pharmaceutical firm to temporarily suspend production after one of its workers died in a fire the previous day.
Su Chih-hsiang (蘇志翔), who heads the labor office s manufacturing industry section, said the order was issued to Sci Pharmtech Inc. as on-site conditions are still deemed too unsafe for employees to resume work, following a preliminary inspection of the damage.
According to Su, the company s warehouse located nearby can continue delivery operations as normal.

Taoyuan, Dec. 21 (CNA) A Filipino migrant worker who sustained severe burns in a fire at a pharmaceutical factory in Taoyuan on Sunday has died of his injuries, a company spokesman said Monday.
The employee suffered third-degree burns over 90 percent of his body in the fire, which started around noon Sunday at the five-story factory of Sci Pharmtech Inc. in Taoyuan, spokesman Yang Wen-chen (楊文禎) said at a news conference.
On Monday the Filipino worker died, while another employee, a Taiwanese man, was discharged from hospital after being treated for burns to his hand, Yang said.

At 12:14 p.m. on Sunday, the fire department received a report that a fire had broken out at the Sci Pharmtech Inc. (旭富製藥) factory in Taoyuan City s Luzhu District, which manufactures hydroxychloroquine API. Such was the intensity of the inferno that it rapidly spread to five nearby factories. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they encountered a five-story factory ablaze, and northeasterly winds were sending embers flying in all directions. Firefighters immediately distributed water lines to extinguish the fire, but due to a large number of water-resistant chemicals stored at the scene and high temperatures caused by the flames, the water hoses were burned and firefighters had to retreat.
