EXCLUSIVE: An inner-city Melbourne council has weighed into the conflict between Israel and Gaza, carrying a resolution expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and blaming the violence on the Israeli occupation .
The move has angered Jewish community leaders, who called the resolution “loopy” and “shameful”.
The motion was moved by socialist councillor Stephen Jolly as emergency business, meaning it could be introduced at short notice without widespread community consultation.
“The Council notes with deep concern the escalation of violence in Israel and Palestine, with hundreds of Palestinians killed in the last week and ten in Israel, with Palestinians bearing the brunt of the attacks by the Israeli military in Gaza,” the resolution says.
Australia Israel and Jewish Affairs Council's Ahron Shapiro says local councils embarrass themselves when they get involved in areas outside their purview, like foreign policy.
The remarks come after the Yarra City Council in Melbourne's inner-city passed a resolution this week to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people; criticising Israel for its "occupation" in the conflict.
"Local councils just shouldn't involve themselves with foreign policy issues and it's kind of embarrassing and also annoying at the same time, but it reflects very poorly on them," he told Sky News host Cory Bernardi.

Over the last 20 years Lentil As Anything has been providing over 1000 free nutritious meals a week to vulnerable communities.
This includes refugees and new migrants as well as people who are socially isolated due to mental health issues, limited mobility, advanced age or homelessness.
Four years ago Invatha was walking past the Lentil As Anything restaurant, based at Abbotsford Convent. Although he was studying, he had a bit of spare time so decided to pop inside and ask about volunteering with the organisation.

A Yarra City councillor has been injured outside a South Yarra nightclub in a violent altercation that is now under investigation by Victoria Police.
Anab Mohamud required hospital treatment after sustaining serious facial injuries from the April attack and has failed to attend at least two council meetings.
