Powering Potential Of Neighbourhood Batteries

Empowering Victorian Communities To Reduce Emissions

VIC Premier As a part of delivering its ambitious Climate Change Strategy and halving emissions by 2030, the Andrews Labor Government is establishing seven new Community Power Hubs and providing grants for community groups to install renewable energy and undertake energy audits. Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio today announced $6.5 million to expand the Community Power Hubs program and provide new grants for community organisations. The hubs, which include Indigo Power in Yackandandah, will be set up in regions across the state, with each hub supporting community energy groups in their region by providing support, funding and local expertise.

Powering ahead with community batteries

Date Time Powering ahead with community batteries Community-scale batteries are already achievable in Australia, will complement existing household batteries and will allow more solar energy to be stored in our suburbs, analysis from The Australian National University (ANU) shows. With the move towards community-scale batteries gathering pace across the nation, two new reports from ANU show the best way forward when it comes to their rollout. The batteries have power capacity of around one megawatt (MW), or enough to power around 100 houses. They help “soak up” solar power generated during the day, improving reliability. “They have the potential to play an integral role in Australia’s transition to a decentralised grid by keeping generated energy close to where it will be used,” project lead Dr Marnie Shaw from the ANU Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program (BSGIP) said.

Community battery finally installed in bushfire-prone Mallacoota

28 May 2021 One of the Victorian regions hardest hit by the catastrophic Black Summer of 2019/2020 has been fitted with its first grid-connected community battery storage system, as part of a state government-backed plan to improve energy services in bushfire prone regions. AusNet Services said on Thursday that it had installed Gippsland’s first community battery in the fishing town of Mallacoota, a 1MWh BESS that had the potential to power 1,000 average homes for roughly two hours, and up to one day when combined with a generator. AusNet said the lithium-ion battery and generator would keep the power running for the town while crews restored any problems that cropped up along the incoming powerline – a 240km line from Bairnsdale that often suffered from outages caused by storms, vegetation or wildlife.
