Local student journalists continue racking up the accolades for their work. Recently, a total of nine journalists earned 12 honors at the Georgia Scholastic Press Association Spring Awards.
The Prowler, the online newspaper of Starrâs Mill High, was represented by five student-journalists in multiple categories.
Daniel Stackhouse won an All-Georgia Award for Caption Writing, a Superior Award for COVID-19 Coverage, and a Superior Award for Sports Feature. Annika Pepper won an All-Georgia Award for Photo Essay and a Superior Award for Sports Photography. Rachel Laposka won a Superior Award for Commentary. Mary Jane Gagliano won a Superior Award for News Podcast. Abby Carter won a Superior Award for Sports Game Coverage.

Yunju Lee of McIntosh High has been awarded a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship. Lee, an aspiring writer, is among the 2,500 Merit Scholar designees chosen from a pool of 16,000 finalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program.
National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
This yearâs National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2019 when over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nationâs high school seniors, were named semifinalists on a state-representational basis. Whitewater High School Assistant Principal Maggie Walls has been promoted to principal at McIntosh High School. She will replace Dr. Dan Lane who is retiring at the end of this school year. The Fayette County Board of Education approved her appointment at its May 10 work session.
Walls has 23 years of education experience, all of them in Fayette County. She started her tenure as an English teacher at Starr’s Mill High School before moving to McIntosh High School where she served as the English department chair and gifted coordinator. She was promoted to assistant principal at Whitewater High in 2018.

Harrison Baro of McIntosh High is a 2021 Georgia Scholar. Baro is one of just 323 graduating seniors from around the state to earn the honor as announced by State School Superintendent Richard Woods.
Through the Georgia Scholar program, the Georgia Department of Education identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Students eligible for Georgia Scholar recognition are high school seniors who exhibit excellence in all phases of school life, in community activities, and in the home. Each Georgia Scholar receives a seal for their diploma.

Will fill top spots at Booth Middle, Whitewater Middle, Minter Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary and Inman Elementary; Lane retires at McIntosh High
Six new principals will take the helm when schools open for the 2021-2022 school year. Five of them have been hired by the Fayette County Board of Education following an extensive search, and they are excited about meeting their new school communities.
Stacie Coppola
Stacie Coppola, former assistant principal at Peachtree City Elementary, currently serving as the school system’s elementary virtual administrator, is the new principal at Sara Harp Minter. She will replace John Gibbas who is taking another job within the school system.
