WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in downtown Wilmington was canceled this year.
Back in September, the decision was made to cancel the parade to avoid spreading COVID-19.
“I just felt like it just wasn’t safe,” said Hollis Briggs Jr. who has been organizing the MLK parade in Wilmington for 18 years. “People don’t realize the planning process starts right after the Azalea festival in April and May. And that’s when we start putting all this together. And I just knew that I could not continue forward past September, with the idea of having a parade here in downtown Wilmington. There are a lot of things that have to be done, a lot of money that has to be spent. And I didn’t want to spend all that

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Volunteers from Hattiesburg-based company Cooperative Energy made an impact on local charities with a day of service to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
CEO Jeff Bowman spent Monday morning at Christian Services in Hattiesburg.
“We think this is probably the best way to honor the legacy of Dr. King – is to give back to others, which is what he spent all his life doing right,” Bowman said. “So I think for our employees, I think it’s a rewarding thing to do.”
