Karnataka Covid lockdown news live: Bengaluru saw 157% rise in deaths this week

Karnataka reported 3,500 Covid-related deaths in the week between May 7 and 13 higher than the toll reported in any month since the outbreak of the pandemic reflecting the crushing effect of the massive second wave on the health infrastructure since mid-April. Karnataka’s total positivity rate, which had dipped marginally in the past two days, touched 32.8% with the state reporting 41,779 fresh cases and 373 deaths on Friday.Bengaluru saw 14,316 cases and 121 deaths. The state government is hoping for coronavirus infections to ease sometime in June and is discussing if strict curbs can be gradually relaxed in such a scenario. Experts say this should only be a long view and the immediate focus must be tackling the second wave. At an informal meet with chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday, all the cabinet members handling Covid-19 duties reportedly backed the idea of extending the lockdown by two weeks from May 24.
