County celebrates broadband expansion with ribbon cutting

About 14 months after Fayette County leaders set out to expand broadband access, 27 new hotspots are operational, many in mountainous areas that had little to no coverage before. On Tuesday, the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, commissioners and VITALink LLC, contractor for the project, came together to rural Gibbon Glade to celebrate the progress made so far with a ribbon cutting. The event was held at one of the new hotspots at Canaan Church, 498 Canaan Church Road. Pastor Greg Moran said he and others near the church have experienced firsthand how life-changing the new hotspot is to the residents in the area, especially amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Cheers & Jeers

Cheers: Ryerson Station State Park and its manager, Alan Johnson, are moving forward with the massive and ongoing “Revisioning Ryerson” project, which includes the modernization of campgrounds and the construction of a new aquatics center at park in western Greene County. Johnson recently announced that despite setbacks and temporary shutdowns caused by winter weather and the COVID-19 pandemic, the project is on track, and the new pool complex is expected to be completed sometime this summer. That will undoubtedly be enjoyed by any visitors seeking refuge from the warm weather and the pandemic blues. Johnson and construction crews have been working diligently to complete the project that has been years in the making. We also salute the many in- and out-of-county visitors who have continued to travel to Ryerson and use its campgrounds and cottages, and take advantage of the precious resource located in the rural hills of Greene County.

Fayette task force hoping to have all willing residents vaccinated by May 31

Fayette County’s Vaccine Task Force continues to add names of homebound residents and will hold an after-hours clinic to help reach a goal of all willing residents to be vaccinated by May 31. “We had about 100 (homebound residents) added to the list as of yesterday,” said Muriel Nuttall, task force co-chair on Wednesday. A week prior, the task force started the vaccine list for those unable to leave their homes due to illness. Emergency medical service providers will travel to residents’ locations to administer both first and second doses of vaccine via appointment. There is no charge for the vaccine.
