KALISPELL, Mont. - Thereâs a battle brewing between the wrestling community and the Montana High School Association, as community members try to honor 9-year-old Maverick Bench, who passed away in January.Â
Maverick Bench was known for his beautiful blue eyes, his love for his four brothers, who he called âthe boysâ, and his obvious playfulness and love for the world around him.
But he was particularly known throughout the community for being really, really good at wrestling.
âMaverick learned to walk on the flathead braves wrestling mats,â Logan Bench, Maverick s father said.
So when Maverick was diagnosed with aplastic anemia in 2020, it was in part the wrestling community that rallied.

KALISPELL â Two sisters in Flathead County are doing what they can to support the Bench family after their young son Maverick Bench passed away from complications from a rare condition earlier this week.
Sisters Megan Upton and Leanne Wagner started their own business last August, 406 Soap and Candles Company, making handcrafted artisan products. The pair decided to make specialized âCaptain Maverickâ lotion, soap and candles after hearing of Maverickâs story, with all proceeds going directly to the Bench family.
In a Facebook post Thursday afternoon, Mavericks' family said his team of doctors have been in contact with the drug manufacturer Chimerix and are working towards a treatment plan.
