WINNIPEG Manitoba Hydro is looking for a potential rate hike come the fall. During a legislative committee meeting Tuesday morning, Manitoba Hydro President and CEO Jay Grewal revealed the Crown Corporation is looking for a 3.5 per cent rate increase to take effect Oct. 1, 2021. The rate increase that we presented will allow Manitoba Hydro over the longer term to move towards being able to start to generate net income to be able to pay down its debt and to get closer to achieving that 75-25 debt-equity target, she told the Standing Committee on Crown Corporations. Grewal said Hydro believes the assumed rate hike – which has not been approved – is required.

Today kicks off the 365-day countdown until Niverville hosts the 2022 Manitoba Games powered by Manitoba Hydro. Niverville hosts the Games February 27 to March 5, 2022.
The Niverville Host Society, under the direction of 70+ lead volunteers, is developing operational plans for every aspect of the Games, from food services and transportation, to signage and technology, to sport and venues, all with enhanced safety protocols on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Manitoba Games powered by Manitoba Hydro is the largest ongoing multi-sport event in the province. Thorough planning is necessary well in advance for an event this size, where athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and sponsors from across the province work together to provide a safe and memorable experience for everyone,” said Janet McMahon, Interim President & CEO of Sport Manitoba. �

Manitoba Hydro announced that the reorganization of its subsidiary Manitoba Hydro International (MHI). The reorganization follows an independent review of MHI operations and helps ensure the subsidiary’s business aligns with Strategy 2040, Manitoba Hydro’s long-term strategic plan – developed to enhance the focus on the utility’s core business of delivering clean, affordable and reliable energy to Manitobans.
The comprehensive review determined that MHI was operating in higher-risk international countries that exposed Manitoba customers to potential liabilities, including security risks for employees and financial risks. It was also identified Manitoba Hydro customers effectively subsidized MHI through MHI’s use of Manitoba Hydro assets.
