Premier Brian Pallister said there are strong signals of a third wave in Manitoba, much like those in the provinces to either side of it. “Despite our best collective efforts however, COVID is on the rise,” he said. “The variants of concern are here. The vaccines, in large part, aren’t here yet.” Chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin said public health officials are seeing concerning trends, including more contacts connected to confirmed cases, evidence of larger gatherings, rising test positivity (the five-day rate was 5.7 per cent April 19) and higher case numbers in younger Manitobans. He also said about two-thirds of recent cases in Winnipeg have been infections caused by variants of concern. Following these tightened orders, he said, may be Manitobans’ last chance to avoid a much stricter lockdown situation.
The P1 variant was detected in someone from the Interlake-Eastern health region, the provincial government says. A total of 153 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Manitoba on Thursday, including 73 in Winnipeg and 57 in the north, which remains on pace to see more than 1,000 cases in the month of April. The other three health regions had 10 or fewer cases. Four previously announced cases were removed from the provincial total due to data corrections for a net daily increase of 149 cases. Thirty-seven of the newly lab-confirmed cases in the province’s north were from the Island Lake health district, while there were 12 from the Grand Rapids/Misipawistik/Mosakahiken/Moose Lake/Easterville/Chemawawin and four from the Flin Flon/Snow Lake/Cranberry/Sherridon health district.
The location of the variant case is unknown - information about the location of variant cases, other than which of the five Manitoba health regions the case was found in, has not been released. As of April 13, 479 total variant of concern cases have been found throughout Manitoba. Two people have died from COVID-19 variants in Manitoba.
