An artist s impression of what the $4.6 million Te Wānanga Taiao education and accommodation centre will look like once it s finished. The Pūkaha National Wildlife centre, which draws 42,000 visitors a year, is world-famous as the home of the first white kiwi that hatched in captivity, and its unique cultural hīkoi through the reserve, run by Rangitāne. Court said the centre had long offered educational day trips for schools, but many had expressed interest for more in-depth environmental education, including overnight stays. The new 916-square-metre facility, dubbed Te Wānanga Taiao, will include accommodation for 40 people, plus a wharenui that will seat 150 people or sleep 50.

Pūkaha Forest now belongs to the people of New Zealand after it was gifted by Rangitāne iwi over the weekend.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern attended the gifting ceremony at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, near Mt Bruce, on Saturday where 942 hectares of native forest - home to native birds and important conservation work - was gifted to the nation.

Police have arrested two people after cash and methamphetamine, worth up to $450,000, was found near a crashed vehicle north of Masterton.
A speeding vehicle, travelling towards Eketahuna, didn t stop for Police on State Highway Two yesterday afternoon.
Police didn t chase the vehicle, but found it crashed in a shallow culvert near Mt Bruce a few minutes later.
A 21-year-old man and 22-year-old woman have been charged with possession of methamphetamine for supply.
The man was also charged with a range of driving offences.
Both appeared in Masterton District Court today and were remanded in custody to reappear on Friday, April 23.

What happens when an artist loves horses, photography, textiles and children s art?
Artist-designed flags will fly across six towns and at the ANZAC Memorial Bridge at Kaiparoro for the annual Service (2pm). The ANZAC Bridge Fellowship for 2020/2021 honours the horses that went to war. It was awarded to Esther Bunning, NZ Professional Photographer of the Year, and a portrait artist experienced in photographing people as well as the wild Kaimanawa horses in the central plateau.
For the ANZAC Bridge Fellowship project, Esther photographed the ANZAC Mounted Troopers – Les Chevaliers from Eketāhuna and Amuri Mounted Rifles Troop from the ANZAC Mounts Charitable Trust, Equine Rehab Unit, from North Canterbury – who rode in formation from Eketāhuna to the ANZAC Memorial Bridge on Armistice Day 2020.
