On Thursday, Sept. 15, 1955, readers looking through the Standard-Freeholder were greeted with headlines discussing the success of the Avonmore Fair, and how the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders would begin their training in the fall but the biggest news (taking up half the front page, followed by several sections within the newspaper itself) was the grand opening of Cornwall’s “newest, largest, and costliest building,” the new Hotel Dieu Hospital.
During the grand opening, the reporter noted “Cornwall’s newest, largest, and costliest building opened its doors for the first time in an official dedication and opening ceremonies yesterday.”
