McConnell Scholars Program connects North State grads to opportunities

View Comments Teyanna Mackay, an 18-year-old graduating senior at Enterprise High School, is thinking about what she will study in college. She hasn t made up her mind whether it will be business, marketing or education. She just knows she wants to give back to her community. To enrich people s lives the way they have enriched hers, she said.  Mackay s good grades, hard work and community service helped her earn a scholarship from the McConnell Foundation to pay her way through university. That makes her part of an elite group of North State students. Only 30% of students who apply to the scholarship program are accepted, said David Tanner, the senior program officer of scholarships and higher education at the McConnell Foundation. And over 90% of the students who are accepted, graduate, he said.

$111M Block 7 in downtown Redding will bring 78 more affordable units

More affordable housing in downtown Redding should be move-in ready by late 2022. As part of the $111 million Block 7 project along California Street, construction of 78 affordable apartments in three buildings has started, McConnell Foundation Chief Operating Officer Shannon Phillips said. The one- and two-bedroom units will range from 680 square feet to 880 square feet. Phillips said rents will be based on mixed-income rates from 30% to 80% of the area’s median income. The 78 units will complement the 84 affordable apartments that opened late last year in Market Center along the re-opened Market Street in downtown. The Market Center apartments are fully leased out. The apartments also are being built at a time when the demand for housing in the area continues to rise, buoyed by the fallout from the 2018 Carr Fire and the COVID-19 pandemic.
